Hello Babes! I decided that going forward I want to have a weekly series where every Tuesday you’ll get a tip from me on how to improve certain aspects of your life. For this week, I’m going to tell you why 1) shopping online saves you more money and 2) how you can actually save more money online.
Why does shopping online save you more money? First, there is the obvious reasons that you avoid wasting your gas to get to the store or the mall, avoid maybe having to pay for parking, and of course if you find nothing, you could have avoided just wasting your time, which philosophically is money too. The not so obvious reason however, is that shopping online gives you the power of price comparison…which is HUGE!
Think about it. Unless you’re willing to walk around the mall hoping you can find the exact same product at a different store, for a different price, you’re probably going to give up and just buy it then and there. Well shopping online you actually can compare to see if there is another place to get your product from or something very similar for cheaper.
Another overlooked reason is affiliate, coupon, or sale codes. I don’t know why but I find that a lot of places only allow coupon or affiliate codes to be used on online orders and that often times there would be a sale going on online but they don’t honor it in store. Not sure the reasoning behind this but whether it’s 10%, 20%, or 50% off that’s less money coming out of your wallet. Sure if you have to pay shipping, maybe the monetary savings aren’t really that big, but did manage to save the struggle of getting there, parking, and driving back.
How to actually save money shopping online? It’s literally as simple as using EBates.com. I know it’s going to sounds gimmicky, but I promise this post is not sponsored at all and Ebates is 100% legit. Here’s 4 easy steps on what to do:
- Log on to Ebates.com and sign up either with your e-mail or Facebook Account. If you are a first time enroller, you can get a $10 gift card after your first purchase of $25 or more!
- Select your payment method for getting your money back every 3 months. You can request that your money be sent in check form in the mail or via deposited in your PayPal.
- Search the thousands of retailers they carry and favorite (by clicking the heart) the stores you shop at most frequently.
- Select the store you want to shop at. Hit the shop now button. Shop the site like normal. That’s it!
But how?! What happens is that Ebates uses a special like (kind of like an affiliate link) that tracks the store and order you placed back to your account. It uses this link then to add whatever % cashback into your account. All your little cashback amounts are stowed away and every 3 months you get paid via check or PayPal. That’s a very simple way of explaining things but that’s the jist.
When you look at all the stores there will either be a % amount next to it or a coupons only next to it. Coupons only mean you get no cashback, but usually the coupons on a pretty good deal in itself. And then the % cashback is obviously the amount of cashback you get for your purchase. Yes most are 2-6% back which doesn’t seem like much but you’d be surprised how fast the cashback adds up and some sites like Priceline.com carry 10% cashback! EBates also does double cashback on occasion where they double the amount you get back for a period of time.
Still don’t believe me? See for yourself. These are screenshots of MY EBates account and here you can see the layout of my favorite stores and arrows with meaning. I blocked out any personal information but you can see the grand total cashback I’ve gotten since starting my account and you can also see the $20 I got cashback from Priceline in a single purchase!
The way I think about it, is you have nothing to lose by taking an extra step to search for the online store through EBates first if you’re going to shop at that store anyway. If you’re planning a vacation and going to be using a travel site like Priceline anyway, it’s literally as simple as clicking the link through EBates first. You’ll probably forget you even did it but a couple days later, you’ll get an e-mail showing you how much cashback you actually saved and it’s an addicting feeling.
